More about me
My name is Rosie and I am a mum to three boys – two school aged children and one grown up!
Growing up I was brought up in a family with strong female role models on both sides, my nan’s were incredible women who showed me what mattered in life community and building women up to succeed in all areas of their lives including the birth of their babies and the early post-natal days. My mum continued this lesson through out my childhood building her own community network when we moved to an area away from the extended family. Everyone knew that if they were struggling with ill health or just life then if my mum could help, she would lend a listening ear or provide practical support where she could. When I had my first son my mother was my greatest champion alongside a close family friend. They stayed with me throughout my birth and my early post-natal days – they took care of me so I could take care of my baby. This ignited something inside me and made me think about how could everyone feel nurtured and supported in this vulnerable period in their life and how can I support others? It wasn’t until my second son was born that I found Doula UK and trained on an approved training course in 2009. I have been in and out of the doula world ever since alongside my other passion of veterinary medicine. In 2019 I became an accredited breastfeeding counsellor so that I could extend my knowledge and reach more mothers needing support in the early days. I ran monthly groups providing breastfeeding support and information alongside community – I am looking for a new venue to offer this again to mothers very soon.
Having someone by your side to help you navigate pregnancy, birth and early motherhood can have a profound and long-lasting affect as you settle into and adjust to motherhood. It can allow you to explore all options available to you, gather knowledge and information so you can find the best path for you. Having an extra person after the birth can give you the time to bond with your baby and for you to find your feet in your new role as a mother, be this the first time as a new mum or the fifth time as a new mum. We all need that time in the early days when someone is there to help us, listen to any concerns and reassure. I want to be able to build a community of local mothers who are powerful, ask questions and know who to turn too when they need a listen ear or helping hand.
Many mothers wonder how a doula can help support their partner or the family unit. Doulas are in a great position to help take some of the pressure off the partner – a doula can ensure that the partner has a good education about birth and early post-natal days, they can offer to give the partner a break during birth ensuring they can eat, drink, use the loo or just rest so they can then come back refreshed and ready to support. They can offer guidance as to how they can practically support their partner both during the birth and in the early days at home. By building a relationship with partners during the antenatal visits this can then help to work together to support the mother during birth. Doulas can also help with other children and I am happy to care for any pets in the household.
I am a mentored doula focusing mostly on post-natal care but do also take a limited number of birth clients a year. I cover the Dover area but if you are outside of Dover please do get in touch as I maybe able to support you or put you in touch with a local Doula.
